3,200 more soldiers to deploy to Afghanistan



About 3,200 soldiers from 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, of Fort Campbell, Ky., will deploy late this summer as part of President Obama’s 30,000-troop build-up in Afghanistan, the Defense Department announced Tuesday.This means that by late summer, almost the entire 101st Airborne Division – headquarters, four brigade combat teams and a combat aviation brigade – will be serving in Afghanistan.The 4th BCT returned from its most recent deployment, also to Afghanistan, in March 2009.In addition to 4th BCT, 101st Airborne, officials also announced Tuesday that about 900 soldiers from several units will deploy to Afghanistan throughout the summer.This most recent announcement brings the number of troops who have received orders to deploy as part of the build-up to about 29,200.They include 1st BCT, 10th Mountain Division, of Fort Drum, N.Y.; 2nd BCT, 101st Airborne Division, of Fort Campbell; 4th Combat Aviation Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, of Fort Hood, Texas; at least 6,700 support forces; and 8,500 Marines.

VIVAnews - PT PAL Indonesia tengah mengincar teknologi dua negara, Jerman dan Korea Selatan, untuk digandeng membuat kapal selam di Indonesia.

Direktur Jenderal Sarana Pertahanan Kementerian Pertahanan Gunadi menjelaskan, produsen kapal PT PAL masih terkendala teknologi untuk memproduksi sendiri kapal selam di galangannya.

"Sebetulnya PT PAL bisa buat sendiri tapi terkendala teknologi dan peralatan sehingga tidak mau gambling di tingkat safety pengguna," kata Gunadi kepada VIVAnews di Jakarta, 9 Februari 2010.

Selain berencana membuat kapal selam dan telah berhasil membuat kapal perang FPG-57, PT PAL juga tengah mempersiapkan untuk membuat kapal perang jenis Perusak Kawal Rudal (PKR). PT PAL yakin bisa membuat kapal perang bersenjatakan peluru kendali tersebut dalam waktu 4 tahun. Harga satu kapal PKR mencapai 170 juta euro.

Gunadi menjelaskan, industri strategis di Indonesia telah mampu memasok alutsista dengan teknologi menengah. Dia mencontohkan, PT Dirgantara Indonesia yang sudah bisa memproduksi pesawat MPA dan telah diekspor ke Eropa. "Kemampuan kita sudah cukup memadai untuk teknologi menengah, tapi untuk teknologi tingkat tinggi memang harus pelan-pelan," ujarnya.

Untuk peralatan dengan teknologi tinggi, kata dia, jika tidak diproduksi dalam jumlah banyak (massal), malah "jatuhnya" akan mahal. Seperti pembuatan pesawat jet tempur, akhirnya bermitra dengan Korea Selatan untuk menekan biaya produksi. "Itupun baru bisa dipakai pada 2020," ujarnya.

Meski Indonesia masih cukup tersengal-sengal mengembangkan industri strategis berteknologi maju, namun industri pendukung pertahanan seperti pabrik amonium nitrat di Kalimantan Timur akan terus dikembangkan. Pabrik amonium nitrat akan dikembangkan untuk bahan baku peledak.

Sementara di industri pengapalan, kata Gunadi, telah dikembangkan produksi kapal-kapal cepat berbahan komposit di banyuwangi dan kapal patroli cepat berbahan alumunium di Batam.

HMAS Kanimbla was built for the United States Navy as USS Saginaw and was commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy in August 1994. She has under-gone extensive modifications for her new role as a helicopter capable amphibious transport ship.

Kanimbla's primary role is to transport, land and support a force of up to 450 personnel, their vehicles and equipment. Kanimbla is fitted with a helicopter hangar capable of supporting up to four Army Black Hawk or three Navy Sea King helicopters. Army landing craft can also be carried on the forward flight deck to provide ship-to-shore transport. Accessed through a stern door, storage space is available on the vehicle deck for Army vehicles and other large items of equipment.

The ship has operations and planning rooms and a comprehensive array of communications equipment to support joint operations. Kanimbla is fitted with the largest and most comprehensive medical facilities in the Fleet, with a 40-bed hospital incorporating full surgical and recovery facilities.

Kanimbla is the second RAN ship to carry the name. Kanimbla (I) was a fast cruiser requisitioned and converted to an armed merchant cruiser for the Royal Navy during World War II . In 1943, she was further converted to an infantry landing ship and commissioned into the RAN.
